barthel: perpetua: Sleigh Bells “Rill Rill” At long last, a “Rill Rill” video! They pretty much nailed it. Nice bandolier, Alexis! I love this video in part because it’s a sort of mashup of two of my most favorite blog posts ever: the one about how the video for Kanye’s “Flashing Lights” dramatically and patiently explores a single image rather than just cutting between a bunch of stuff, and...

Life would be so much easier
If rather than grading my students’ exams, I could just draw a picture of a dinosaur, photocopy it, and randomly distribute it to half of my students with the message “oh no! The wild Exam Dinosaur roamed my classroom and ate your exam!”  Alas, reliability and not preciousness is part of my continued employment.

Winner of Belle and Sebastian Contest is... →
perpetua: I interviewed this kid yesterday about winning the Write About Love contest. Doree pointed out to me shortly afterward that he was born the same year the band got together! I wonder if that was part of the reason Stuart picked him. Cool post, Matthew, but I can’t get over this one detail: “I’m an avid skateboarder and a couple skateboarding videos use their...

– Trish Keenan, from a Wire Interview with Broadcast I tried a few times to write about Broadcast. Quite frankly I wasn’t up to the job. Their music didn’t particularly reward the plod of analysis: but interviews like this show how smart, open and articulate they were about their processes and...

Imperial Teen - Take It Like A Man, Boy
perpetua: DOWNLOAD IT! Though Imperial Teen debuted to some acclaim in the mid-90s, the band has become fairly obscure over the past decade. I’m sure a lot of it is the unfortunate by-product of label politics — they started out on a major in the 90s boom but ended up as a low-priority act on Merge — but I think you could make a more cynical argument that the band’s overt queer themes made some...

Vinyl Sales Increase Despite Industry Slump →
yvynyl: Same news as last year. Can anyone spot a trend here?  C’mon folks.  People want vinyl. Why? Because music fucking rules.  And it rules even more when you’re listening to it through the sweet, sweet soundwaves of a needle vibrating down a channel and out warm, rich like chocolate to your ears. One day soon, the music industry will stop jerking off to Lady Gaga ringtones and realize that...

"Wake Up, Geek Culture" →
So I’m a week or so late on this Patton Oswalt piece on the “death of geek culture,” and before I get into my reservations I’ll say that there’s a lot in there that really resonates with me.  In particular, the idea that the ubiquity and ease of acquisition of things makes it easy to become a compiler.  I’ve noticed this in my own habits; I’ll grab...
