– from a book I found on a shelf in my classroom (pre-dating me) called Media Today: Interpreting Newspapers, Magazines, Radio, TV, Movies and the Internet, copyright 1996. All of this - the awful style, the unintentional facetiousness, and the similarity to a Simpson’s filmstrip - is why I...

Let the Grumbling Commence
The Pitchfork Top 200 Albums of the Decade list is here!  I think I’m going to take the same stance this time around - scan the list each day and then go back this weekend and read all the blurbs when I have time to digest them. I recognize that for most people, a list’s appeal is the opportunity to gripe / brag about your preferences being shared with the people who are publishing...

I'm Curious
Do you have specific music you put on when you want / need to be productive?  Whether it’s a specific genre, a Pandora station, etc, I’m curious, especially if it’s for desk work / studying.  I’m looking to establish a correcting routine a couple times a week and I think a playlist might help set the mood. So - what do you put on in these situations?

Tuesday Teaser #4
tristn: chrishol: Imagine that you’re playing Russian Roulette with your arch-nemesis Bob. The gun that you’re using has a standard circular barrel, containing six chambers. Bob places two bullets in consecutive chambers and spins the barrel. He puts the gun to his head and pulls the trigger. He gets lucky. Now it’s your turn. Before you pull the trigger, you can spin the barrel or you can...

The Birth of 'Born to Run'
joecarryon: Peter Knobler, a writer for Crawdaddy, got an early listen in Springsteen’s Long Branch house. The place was cluttered with motorcycle magazines and old 45s. Over Bruce’s bed was a poster of Peter Pan leading Wendy out the window. The detail is suggestive: “Wendy let me in, I wanna be your friend/ I want to guard your dreams and visions.” To Knobler, the “song sounded huge, like a...

Pre-Sale for the 2010 Pavement Reunion →
bmichael: Pre-sale opens tomorrow at 10am for the first show of Pavement’s 2010 Reunion, the 9/21/10 show in Central Park. The password is “ZOWEE” (mbvmusic) I mean, if Ticketmaster is selling tickets to it, then there must be a show, right? I can’t believe I have to buy tickets to a concert more than a year in advance.  I’m still going to do it, though.

Trade Off
I don’t watch a lot of TV, but when I’m home and I’m not ready to start working again, I enjoy putting on Pardon the Interruption or a repeat of The Simpsons.  Today was one of those days - the clock rolled to 4:57 and I flipped over to my local Fox affiliate for an hour of Simpsons repeats, only to find that it’s been replaced by something called “The Dr. Oz...
