Writing and Rejection.
This whole thing is terrific. I was going to excerpt just the 4th and 5th paragraphs of his post, but decided the context is important as well. I’m still not sure if I am adequately equipped to handle rejection the way I should, but his point of being (at least metaphorically) in the same room as his writing heroes makes complete sense to me.
In other words: reblogged as a personal...

Lily Allen “The Fear”
Vapid, cynical, hyper-consumerist neo-celebs of the Paris Hilton/Heidi Montag variety are utterly loathsome, but when we tear into them in comedy and art, it can often seem too easy and overly mean-spirited in way that eclipses any righteousness we could hope to claim in calling out their grotesque antics. Yes, they are clearly villains in the context...

New Los Campesinos! album out on February 1!

…and having a character who spends his entire time on screen singing Bowie songs without a single line of dialogue (it’s been a while since I’ve seen the movie, so correct me if I’m wrong) feels excessively odd.
Yeah, Seu Jorge has a few lines - “I like her hairdo” is the only one I can think of. Ordinarily I’d never nitpick like...

Remembering Jasper Howard as a Friend and Teammate... →
This has been seemingly everywhere around here in the past few days, and it keeps striking me as profoundly sad. This afternoon alone, I listened to local talk radio callers call in dumbfounded, Connecticut’s coach recount the players meeting with the family, and now this ex-teammates account of grief and (somewhat tangential) regret.
Whereas he was once the Milhouse Van Houten to Malkmus’ Bart Simpson,...
– Pitchfork: Album Reviews: Spiral Stairs: The Real Feel
I realize I’m the target reader for this review, but this is such a wonderful takedown that it almost makes up for the bummer of Spiral Stairs’ album being sub-par.

I maintain my position - if selling T-shirts = stability, then I’m ok with it.

– One nation under a Moog | Music | The Guardian
Oddly, these are the very things that music critics usually seem to have the hardest time discussing. “Oh, I dig that new x because it’s catchy and it makes me feel y!” How often do you read a review and have a sense of how the music makes the...

OK, so every time I see a special edition of a recently released album (reissues of old albums are a different bird, for another post) I interpret it as one of the following:
A way of enticing fans who didn’t buy it the first time (re: grabbed it from a torrent) to buy the album by adding extra tracks.
A way of milking die-hards by making them buy the same album again...

David Letterman’s Week Gets Worse After Receiving... →
Somewhat related thought that came up while reading that article: the lawyer for Halderman (the guy who tried to extort Letterman) says that he intends to unveil evidence in court that “proves Dave sexually harassed an untold number of his employees.”
If true, Letterman deserves whatever punishment comes down, but that’s not the point - isn’t Halderman the one on trial...
No one ever made me a mixtape.
Somewhat related thought - I’ve been a member of the Replacements mailing list Skyway for the better part of the last decade. Every December, they arrange a tape / CD / etc trade - people who want in send their address, the listmaster scrambles them, and then people contacted their partner and sent away a mix, a music artifact, whatever.
I’m not volunteering to put this together...

So, anyone else see SNL this weekend? Lady Gaga’s 2nd performance was so unexpectedly wonderful. It made me ask whether it was planned - the way for someone so quirky to grab the spotlight is to sit at a piano and belt out parts of your songs playing against type.
Then again, I’m cynical. Non-cynically, it was terrific.
Tumblr Dashboard vs Google Reader
So we all know the feeling: you’re busy living life for a few days and come home way too far behind to catch up on the things people have been posting. I’m not complaining (obviously) but I like keeping up with the wonderful things you folks write/post/share.

– Mark Pytlik on #21 In Rainbows
Pytlik here desediments a kind of presupposition that’s been nagging our critical understanding of Radiohead, and he does it really well. It’s almost a given that Kid A will be in the top-five. It may even be #1. But it’s clear that what we listen to when we...
